Expense and Intrigue

Pembrokeshire

24/25 April 1999

As a trial run, the hard core decided that a try out at Pembroke would be a good idea. After various lengths of journey and means of nourishment, everyone managed to find the accommodation, it does help if you take the directions (Anthony). Much to the delight of the late arrivals the fridge was fully stocked with beer, unfortunately Amy and Andrew had decided that bed was a much better option and missed out on the beer swilling game of pool.

The morning brought a full breakfast and vege sausages for those who partake in that sort of thing and a photo shoot outside the lodge, just in case the sun went in. It was then a convoy down to Martins Haven to meet the RIB and see Andrew's new drysuit (expense number 1). It was much more interesting to see how many people it would take to get Amy into her wetsuit, the big question was how long she would last in it (intrigue number 1)! Everyone enjoyed the walk down to the beach even if some people wimped out of carrying their kit and got their respective other halves to do the deed. It was then a quick whizz around to the north wall of Skomer. A very pretty dive with loads of life once the night vision returned and torches had been found. Anthony did a very good job of releasing the delayed marker buoy (was he narked or not - intrigue number 2) and Jake managed to lose his computer (expense number 2). A search failed to find it and he is now trying to find a monitor, just like the old one (change what is that?). Kevin and Andrew seemed to be the only people not to have an eventful dive and seemed to be gone for ages (ages when you are stuck in a boat).

It was then back for an investigation of the rolls and a decision on the type of squashed animal they contained (intrigue number 3), while the two been here before divers went off for air. They returned with air and a delightful purple hood for Andrew (expense number 3), he really is becoming Tinky Winky while no-one is looking. The second dive was a little less enjoyable with the current running, but loads of life again including first crawfish since Ireland. Air fills included the purchase of a weight harness for Andrew (expense number 4), which Amy has the pleasure of adjusting later in private.

The showers at the lodge were tried and proved to be a success for all including the 5* hotel towels. It was then to the St Brides Inn for a three course blow out and a little drink round the corner, just to see what it was like. Bed was then calling or was it the lodge ghost or was it Anthony (intrigue number 4).
