Voice from the POT
(Editors comments)

Wow! What a busy year it has been so far. The club has been very active both in training and diving, and we have much to report in this issue.

First of all lets get the nasty admin stuff out of the way, please ensure that you read the section entitled "Important Membership Notice" in the right hand column of this page.

With this newsletter you will also receive the minutes from the AGM and the cash flow report for last year.

As always, I would like to thank those that have provided contributions for this issue. If you have any ideas for articles you would like to see in the newsletter let me know. Please send me any pictures, stories, trip reports, humour, gossip or rumours for the next issue.

Admin Corner

NB Please note the Secretary changed at the AGM, please ensure any enquiries are sent to Katy Richens. Her contact details are at the end of this newsletter. Thanks are extended to William for the hard work he put in doing this job last year.

Castaways' membership is £10.00, due 1st January every year. Please send cheques to the Treasurer, all cheques should be made payable to "Castaways Sub-Aqua Club".

When you get your BS-AC reminder can you reply as promptly as possible. Anyone wanting to change his or her BS-AC renewal month should contact the Secretary.

If your medical is due, let the secretary know and a medical form can be sent to you. Please allow a couple of weeks.

DO's Ramblings

Simple really, if you have any ideas for diving or have any training requirements please get in touch with the Diving Officer. He doesn't necessarily have to be invited on your trip.

Important Membership Notice

This will be the last newsletter that you receive unless you have paid your Castaways' membership fee for this year. Also Castaways will be unable to process your BSAC membership renewal unless you have paid your Castaways' membership fee. This is due to the costs incurred by the club in producing the newsletter and processing BSAC paperwork. If your name does not appear in the list at the end of this newsletter then you have not paid up. If you are not on the list and think that you have paid, please contact the Treasurer to sort out the confusion.

Heinekan Export

This category is awarded to any non-member who has made an outstanding contribution to the use of the English language in a diving context within the last year. Subsequently joining the Club will not exclude nominations.

Wessfed

As some of you may have noticed in the accounts and in Anthony's write up of his training escapades, we pay membership to Wessfed. This is a collection of clubs in the Wessex region that help each other out with training, courses and trips. They also have meetings with different speakers/topics over the winter months. The membership cost covers administration and does not make a profit. We receive newsletters containing details of trips, courses and relevant issues for this cost which have all been presented to you in our newsletter.

Although it does not involve all club members, it has assisted a number of Castaways members. Wessfed enabled us (indirectly) to run the O2 and FAFD courses to get our own instructors approved with a lot of help from Paul on the actual course (thanks Paul). It also means we have access to restricted inland sites which need a permit to dive and are limited to 10 divers at any one time (ideal for training and winter plops!).

The Wessfed meetings take place once a month in Bristol, with reports from the member clubs. This leads to discussion on sites, charter boats and training issues, all of which benefit the club. The meetings recently explored the use of other inland sites in the Swindon and Oxford areas, and pools which we will keep you up to date on. If there is anything further you want to know about Wessfed or want a specific course which can be run through Wessfed let me know.

Minimum Grade Sports Diver (Club Divers may be allowed at the Diving Officer's discretion)

Based in picturesque Shepton Mallet it's a 30 minute drive to the dive centre and the area is rich in pubs and restaurants, road-kill a speciality.

Minimum Grade Club Diver
Estimated cost In the region of £500ish

Notes

As you can see the final details of some of these trips can only be determined once we know how many people are interested, please contact the trip organiser as soon as possible if your are interested.

If anybody has ideas for dive trips, please can they let the Diving Officer know. You do not have to be an Advanced Diver to organise trips, providing the trip has the approval of the Diving Officer and an Advanced Diver agrees to marshal the diving activities.
