Voice from the POT
(Editors comments)

After the SGM held in Weymouth earlier this year a discussion was held about the way forward for the club. It was agreed amongst those present that a review of the club by-laws was in order. The committee has undertaken to review the by-laws and see if they need to be modified in any way to reflect the current and future needs of the club. The committee have agreed to have any suggestions ready for circulation early next year. This will give all members chance to comment on the suggestions before the AGM where the finalised proposals can be voted on.

It is worth stressing two points here, the first is that the committee is formed by members who give their time to run the club on behalf of the membership as a whole, they need your input if the proposals are to reflect the wishes of the club members. Secondly, no changes to the club's by-laws can be made without a two-thirds majority at a properly convened general meeting. So changes cannot be rushed through without the backing of the membership. Everybody will have a chance to voice their opinions, so let the committee know what your feelings are. The contact details are printed at the back of this newsletter.

As you will notice later in this newsletter some more dates for training have been tentatively specified. If you have any training needs (finishing dives, lectures etc) please contact the Diving Officer.

As always, I would like to thank those that have provided contributions for this issue. If you have any ideas for articles you would like to see in the newsletter let me know. Please send me any pictures, stories, trip reports, humour, gossip or rumours for the next issue.

News

A birth in the club!

Warmest congratulations go to Rachel and Horace for the birth of their son Heimdall Bailey (shortened to Hallin). Heimdall was born on Wednesday 31st March 1999.

Welcome to new members

The club has welcomed a number of new members this year. On behalf of the club as a whole I hope you enjoy your diving with Castaways. Please remember if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact any of the other members (committee or otherwise).

New committee member

The committee welcomes Amy as the new Social Secretary. Amy volunteered to fill this post and was duly elected at the SGM held in Weymouth during the training weekend at the end of May.

New club meeting place

Also at the SGM a new club headquarters was voted on. When the club was first formed many of its members worked or lived in the London area and it was sensible to have the official meeting place in London. Over the last few years people have moved and this is no longer the case. Also it is very difficult to find a pub in the City of London that opens at the weekend (those people that turned up to this years AGM can testify to that). A large number of members now live in and around the Reading area and this is just as accessible for others as London was. So the new official club meeting place is the "Flyer & Firkin", Reading (Opposite Reading train station).

Admin Corner

Castaways' membership is £10.00, due 1st January every year.

When you get your BS-AC reminder can you reply as promptly as possible. Anyone wanting to change his or her BS-AC renewal month should contact the Secretary.

If anybody has ideas for dive trips, please can they let the Diving Officer know. You do not have to be an Advanced Diver to organise trips, providing the trip has the approval of the Diving Officer and an Advanced Diver agrees to marshal the diving activities.

If anybody would like to assist in organising a trip for next year Suzanne Easton has asked for help, contact her for more details. Assisting in the organisation of trips is a very useful experience that extends your diving knowledge, and provides good background if you want to start organising your own trips.

Competition

A little bit of fun, but can you guess who or what fit these descriptions?

Who or What...

  1. ... doesn't want penetration
  2. ... is 'Freddie'
  3. ... is 'Old Lady'
  4. ... had to remove 'nut traces' (and for a bonus point why?)
  5. ... tango'ed in the waves at 18m
  6. ... had a fish head on their back
  7. ... viciously defends chips with a fork
  8. ... is concerned for nautical health of cut flowers
  9. ... is a "personal Wookie"

Thanks to William for this contribution. Can you think of any others?

Kit can be hired either in Reading or at Horsea or borrowed from a willing source! It is your responsibility to make sure you have everything you need for the dives.

Note Due to the time of year this is being carried out and the number of instructors available, the club will be unable to oversee any other diving over this weekend. If you want to come to Horsea you will be doing your Sports Drills again. The Diving Officer will not take responsibility for any members of the club not undergoing training during this trip.

Tobermory - Isle of Mull

1st April - 8th April 2000

Due to the failure of this trip in 1999, the deposit has been carried over to 2000 and we are planning to re-run the whole thing, hopefully with a little more enthusiasm from the club.

Tobermory is on the north of the Isle of Mull, and is ideal for diving either in the Sound of Mull or around the Islands of Coll and Tiree. The diving is influenced by the Atlantic - the water is dark but very clear with exceptional life including seals and wrecks. The skipper also has some new sites he would like us to try!

Silver Swift
The Silver Swift

The diving will be from a hard boat called Silver Swift, based in Tobermory. Air (no nitrox) is available in Tobermory as is self-catering accommodation.

The cost of the trip will be approximately £300, this includes all dives, air, breakfast, lunches (for those who wish to join the kitty), ferry over to Mull and accommodation. You will need to get to Tobermory and supply your own dive kit, to include two cylinders per person. Due to the nature of the tides everyone will be diving at once so kit shares are not possible.

If you wish a place to be reserved for you, a non-returnable deposit of £50 is required before 1st November 1999. If you pull out after this date you will be liable for the full cost of your place unless you find a replacement. The club will need full payment (£300) by the 1st February 2000 as we need to pay the accommodation and boat shortly after this date.

A form is provided at the end of this newsletter, please fill this in and send it with your deposit to reserve a place on this trip.
